Plasma Cutter
Plasma Cutter – The Evolution
Plasma Cutter exc summary By James Kingston
The technique was further refined and plasma cutting was developed. Plasma cutters use an electric circuit and the heat of an electric arc to create the plasma that cuts the metal.
With further refinements, now non-conducting materials can be cut with plasma cutters. The beauty of the plasma cutter is that the cutting is very clean and the metal directly adjacent to the cut is not affected by the cutting process. With plasma cutters you can cut any shape or angle you want and if you use an automated plasma cutter that has computer numeric controls (CNC) then you can upload a picture into CNC computer and have the plasma cutter cut that image out of the metal. Plasma cutting is different than regular welding.
Plasma Cutter Art
More specifically, I am talking about plasma cutter art. Long gone are the days of big, hard to handle plasma cutters. Now we have little hand held plasma cutters that can be wielded like a knife to cut through metal like butter.
Contrary to what you may think, plasma cutters can produce very intricate detail. The plasma that cuts through the metal is extremely focused and does not have much kerf (the volume of metal that is destroyed in cut). When you shop around for plasma cutter art you will find some very steep prices. Just like a canvas and paint does not cost very much, running a plasma cutter and buying sheet metal is cheap. The value of the metal art does not come from the metal used, although metals like gold and silver could be used. I encourage you to give plasma cutter art a try.
